(23 sep. 1926, Hamlet, N.C., EE.UU.–7 jul. 1967, Huntington, N.Y.).

Saxofonista y compositor estadounidense. Creció en Filadelfia y ganó primero experiencia con las bandas de Dizzy Gillespie y Johnny Hodges. Sus asociaciones con Miles Davis y Thelonious Monk en la década de 1950 colocaron a Coltrane en la vanguardia del jazz moderno. Su cuarteto de principios de la década de 1960 fue uno de los grupos más destacados de la historia del jazz. Su estilo abarcó el jazz modal, que exploró inicialmente con Davis, las complejas estructuras de acordes de sus propias composiciones y, por último, los timbres, dinámicas y registros extremos asociados con el free jazz.
